Joyce is an award-winning self-taught quilter, fiber artist and author of Creating Art Quilts with Panels and Thread Paint a Garden Quilt.
Workshop: Dimensional Thread Painting
Learn the basics of raw edge applique, dimensional thread painting and embellishment on this beautiful Hydrangea with Goldfinch wall hanging. Explore the steps, prep work and process of raw edge applique prior to the actual steps of thread painting.
Much of the workshop explores dimensional thread painting, using zig zag and straight stitching. You will use thread as paint and sew with different types of threads and color combinations. You will see the fabric come to life as you sew and layer the threads on top of your design; adding shading, highlighting, texture and definition.
Please read the supply list carefully. You will need a sewing machine and darning foot capable of doing a zig-zag stitch. For Bernina sewing machines, the BSR stitch regulator that you may use for free motion quilting does not work well for these thread painting techniques
Joyce visits our guild from Asbury, New Jersey. She is an award-winning, self-taught quilter, fiber artist and author. Her first quilt was a tee-shirt quilt, which she enjoyed making, but felt limited in the ability to express her artistic capabilities. Within several months, she began to design pictorial landscape quilts using raw edge applique, thread painting, and a variety of embellishments.
Never knowing the “rules” she broke a lot of them, but with exciting results!
She is the author of two books: Thread Painting a Garden Quilt and Creating Art Quilts with Panels.
Joyce will present a very open and inspiring talk about how she started quilting, leading into art quilts with thread painting. Through many “before” fabric panels with their “after” art quilts, she talks in-depth about how to use dimensional thread painting and embellishments to turn fabric panels into one-of-a-kind art quilts. She hopes you will leave very excited and enthused to try something new with your quilting.

Sign up will start at the November 4 meeting and on-line that day.
The focus for our February, 2024 meeting is Quilt Appraisal. Cindy Brick and Gina Klepppinger, both certified quilt appraisers, will join us for the day.
During our morning time Cindy and Gina will be available to complete professional quilt appraisals. Watch for an opportunity to sign up to have one or more of your quilts appraised. They have agreed to a lower/special fee for quilt appraisals that they complete that morning. Join our team of volunteers and make a difference in your community. Whether you can give a few hours a week or a few hours a month, your time and skills are appreciated.
Cindy and Gina will be our guest speakers for the program portion of our afternoon LNCQ guild meeting. We will be using a panel format for the program so there will be excellent opportunity for all LNCQ members to ask questions. There are many ways to get involved with LNCQ, from volunteering and donating to attending our events and spreading the word. Join our community today to make a difference.
You will leave this workshop with your own original piece painted with the thread painting/quilting started to bring it to life.
In this workshop, you will first learn how to paint images with Procion dyes on cotton. Learning to control the dyes will be emphasized. Among other things, we will cover blending, layering, special effects and painting without bleeding. All of these techniques can be used to create images as complex as portraits or as simple as a line on a scarf.
Each student is asked to bring two or three 18"x 20" designs or drawings that they will transfer onto cloth and then paint. These drawings can be fruits or rounded objects, still life, animals, faces, or anything you would like to paint. Any image can be used as long as it has been made into an 18" X 20" black and white line drawing. It would also help to have an example or an idea of your color choices.
In the second part of the workshop, we will explore new ideas about how to use quilting to enhance the look of your painted cloth. The main objective is to use quilting lines to create depth, texture, tension, or shadowing which will give a new dimension to your quilt. Lines can be inspired by an endless variety of things (nature, architecture, technology, etc.) to add visual interest and reinforce your overall design. Even straight lines can become a design in themselves. You will be working with the images you have painted during the first part of the workshop. This workshop is based on free-motion machine quilting but the design techniques can be adapted to hand quilting. Experience in one or the other is required

Learn basic wool applique techniques as you stitch a columbine flower in wool and turn it into a needle keeper. LNCQ’s Happy Stitchers small group will share their enthusiasm, tips and knowledge for wool applique to help you make your own project. Online registration will open on March 1 so that we get an idea as to how many kits to make. There is no fee for this event. Please join the Happy Stitchers for a morning of stitching and sharing the joy of sewing. (PS – Wool applique is much different than needle-turn applique – it’s a lot of fun!)
