Workshop 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM

Workshop 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM

Workshop 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM

Workshop: Dimensional Thread Painting

Learn the basics of raw edge applique, dimensional thread painting and embellishment on this beautiful Hydrangea with Goldfinch wall hanging. Explore the steps, prep work and process of raw edge applique prior to the actual steps of thread painting.

Much of the workshop explores dimensional thread painting, using zig zag and straight stitching. You will use thread as paint and sew with different types of threads and color combinations. You will see the fabric come to life as you sew and layer the threads on top of your design; adding shading, highlighting, texture and definition.

Please read the supply list carefully. You will need a sewing machine and darning foot capable of doing a zig-zag stitch. For Bernina sewing machines, the BSR stitch regulator that you may use for free motion quilting does not work well for these thread painting techniques

Workshop 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM

Workshop 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM

Joyce visits our guild from Asbury, New Jersey. She is an award-winning, self-taught quilter, fiber artist and author. Her first quilt was a tee-shirt quilt, which she enjoyed making, but felt limited in the ability to express her artistic capabilities. Within several months, she began to design pictorial landscape quilts using raw edge applique, thread painting, and a variety of embellishments.

Never knowing the “rules” she broke a lot of them, but with exciting results!

She is the author of two books: Thread Painting a Garden Quilt and Creating Art Quilts with Panels.

Joyce will present a very open and inspiring talk about how she started quilting, leading into art quilts with thread painting. Through many “before” fabric panels with their “after” art quilts, she talks in-depth about how to use dimensional thread painting and embellishments to turn fabric panels into one-of-a-kind art quilts. She hopes you will leave very excited and enthused to try something new with your quilting.

March 14-18 Hollis Chatelain Workshop

January 9-10 Retreat - Best Western Plus Loveland

March 14-18 Hollis Chatelain Workshop

Dye-Paint Your Images / Bring Them to Life with Quilting

You  will leave this workshop with your own original piece painted with the   thread painting/quilting started to bring it to life.

In  this workshop, you will first learn how to paint images with Procion   dyes on cotton. Learning to control the dyes will be emphasized. Among   other things, we will cover blending, layering, special effects and   painting without bleeding. All of these techniques can be used to  create  images as complex as portraits or as simple as a line on a  scarf.

Each   student is asked to bring two or three 18"x 20" designs or drawings  that  they will transfer onto cloth and then paint. These drawings can  be  fruits or rounded objects, still life, animals,  faces, or anything  you  would like to paint. Any image can be used as long as it has been  made  into an 18" X 20" black and white line drawing. It would also help  to  have an example or an idea of your color choices.

In  the second part of  the workshop, we will explore new ideas about how  to use quilting to  enhance the look of your painted cloth. The main  objective is to use  quilting lines to create depth, texture, tension,  or shadowing which  will give a new dimension to your quilt. Lines can  be inspired by an  endless variety of things (nature, architecture,  technology, etc.) to  add visual interest and reinforce your overall  design. Even straight  lines can become a design in themselves. You will  be working with the  images you have painted during the first part of  the workshop. This  workshop is based on free-motion machine quilting  but the design  techniques can be adapted to hand quilting. Experience  in one or the  other is required
