Workshop: Dimensional Thread Painting

Learn the basics of raw edge applique, dimensional thread painting and embellishment on this beautiful Hydrangea with Goldfinch wall hanging. Explore the steps, prep work and process of raw edge applique prior to the actual steps of thread painting.

Much of the workshop explores dimensional thread painting, using zig zag and straight stitching. You will use thread as paint and sew with different types of threads and color combinations. You will see the fabric come to life as you sew and layer the threads on top of your design; adding shading, highlighting, texture and definition.

Please read the supply list carefully. You will need a sewing machine and darning foot capable of doing a zig-zag stitch. For Bernina sewing machines, the BSR stitch regulator that you may use for free motion quilting does not work well for these thread painting techniques

Workshop 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM

Joyce visits our guild from Asbury, New Jersey. She is an award-winning, self-taught quilter, fiber artist and author. Her first quilt was a tee-shirt quilt, which she enjoyed making, but felt limited in the ability to express her artistic capabilities. Within several months, she began to design pictorial landscape quilts using raw edge applique, thread painting, and a variety of embellishments.

Never knowing the “rules” she broke a lot of them, but with exciting results!

She is the author of two books: Thread Painting a Garden Quilt and Creating Art Quilts with Panels.

Joyce will present a very open and inspiring talk about how she started quilting, leading into art quilts with thread painting. Through many “before” fabric panels with their “after” art quilts, she talks in-depth about how to use dimensional thread painting and embellishments to turn fabric panels into one-of-a-kind art quilts. She hopes you will leave very excited and enthused to try something new with your quilting.

May 1 Make & Take: Wool Applique Needle Keeper

Learn basic wool applique techniques as you stitch a columbine flower in wool and turn it into a needle keeper. LNCQ’s Happy Stitchers small group will share their enthusiasm, tips and knowledge for wool applique to help you make your own project. Online registration will open on March 1 so that we get an idea as to how many kits to make. There is no fee for this event. Please join the Happy Stitchers for a morning of stitching and sharing the joy of sewing. (PS – Wool applique is much different than needle-turn applique – it’s a lot of fun!) January 9-10, 9 AM - 9 PM

Best Western Plus Loveland

Please join fellow LNCQ members for our first in-person event of 2023!

- We have reserved our Best Western meeting rooms for two full days. That gives us generous space to accommodate up to 30 participants.

- As with past sewing events, each attendee will have a table to herself and use of several group cutting and ironing stations. We do encourage everyone to prepare a “project kit” in advance to make it easier for all to share those cutting and pressing stations.

- Registrations will be first-come, first-serve for those who have paid their 2023 LNCQ membership dues.
