Although there are several different ways to organize a round robin quilt project, the basic idea for ours is that each participant starts their own quilt by deciding on a theme/fabric/colors/style and makes a center block. The block and additional/coordinating fabrics are placed in a project box. In each subsequent round, the project box is passed to someone else who will add the next round or border. The quilt gets bigger as the rounds are added. When all the rounds are completed, the original owner gets their quilt top back to do with as they please. Although individual groups can decide otherwise, it is fun to keep the quilt a secret from the original owner until the final reveal.
For examples of round robin themes and ideas, you can search Google Images and Pinterest. We also expect to have a few from previous round robins on display at the December 2024 LNCQ holiday party.
Vickie and Carla will be at the December LNCQ meeting to answer any questions you may have and they will also be available throughout the yearlong project for help and encouragement.
Participating in a Round Robin is a very fun activity, allowing you to meet new LNCQ friends, challenging you to create something interesting for another person, and sometimes forcing you out of your quilting comfort zone. When you sign up, you are making a commitment to complete borders for the other group members’ quilts according to the agreed-upon schedule (See below). So don’t sign up unless you think you can do this. Of course, we know that sometimes life gets in the way. If an emergency happens, you should quickly notify the other members of your group as well as Vickie or Carla so that arrangements can be made for someone else to do your round.
1.Register to participate. Either register online from Nov. 15 to January 15, or sign up at the LNCQ holiday party so that we can organize the groups. If you have a specific group in mind (e.g. from your LNCQ small group), please indicate their names on the form. If you do not have a complete group of 5, please indicate on the form those people you want to be included in your group and we will fill in the others. We will try to make groups by geographic area to make it easier to pass projects if some members cannot attend the LNCQ meetings. Group size will ideally be 5 people. You can be in more than one group if you would like to complete more than one round robin quilt.
2. Get your project box from LNCQ. These will be distributed at the December LNCQ meeting (or can be picked up from Vickie or at the February meeting).
3. January 2025: Decide on your theme/colors/fabrics and make the center block. Maximum size is 24” square (plus ½” seam allowance). It is often best to make the size easily divisible into smaller block units for the borders (e.g. 12”, 15”, 16”, 20”). The center block could also be a small panel. If you are in two groups, you need two center blocks.
4. At the February 2025 meeting: Round 1 begins. Round Robin participants will be invited to come 30 minutes before the regular February LNCQ meeting to meet with their group and exchange boxes. The Round Robin Organizers will provide you with member contact information and the schedule for your rounds. Your box should include:
a) your center block
b) a small selection of desired background and coordinating fabrics
c) a note that describes what you like and dislike. For example, you might say that your theme is flowers, you love purple and you hate pinwheel blocks. Some people may prefer to leave it completely to the whims of their fellow quilters. It is usually expected that participants can add coordinating fabrics from their own stashes, but if you want to be more limiting, you can put that information in your notes.
5. Between meetings: Add a round to the quilt you have been assigned. There are no requirements for what needs to be included in each round (e.g. some round robins specify paper-piecing, applique, circles or other styles). However, we encourage you to be creative. It is also okay to add more than one border as part of your round (e.g. if you need a spacer border to make your block sizes work.) As the quilt top gets bigger, you might consider adding only two sides, resulting in a more asymmetrical look, unless the quilt top owner has indicated they don’t want that.
Online Registration: Opens November 15 and closes January 15
December 2, LNCQ 2024 Holiday Party: Sign up in person -- Pick-up project box if you have already registered or when you register at the December Meeting
January 30: Notification of Groups
February 3, 2025: LNCQ meeting Groups meet and exchange boxes, 1 pm
May 5, 2025: LNCQ meeting Round 1 completed; exchange boxes, 1 pm
August 9, 2025: LNCQ meeting Round 2 completed; exchange boxes, 1 pm
October 6, 2025: LNCQ meeting Round 3 completed; exchange boxes
December 1, 2025: LNCQ Holiday Party Round 4 completed; Reveal final to owner, Groups meet prior to holiday party
The timeline assumes that each group will meet at the LNCQ meetings to exchange their rounds. If you will not be at a meeting, you need to arrange to drop off the project box to the next person on your rotation and pick up the one that you are supposed to be working on next. If you work faster, you may want to arrange with your group to have a shorter schedule. Once you are in your group, you can make adjustments that work best for your group. The objective is to have the quilt tops completed by the December 1, 2025 Holiday Party, where they will be revealed.
